London, 1903.
Forrage’s, the world-famous emporium, and normally a place of wonder and intrigue, has had a shadow cast over it.
A.W.Forrage is being sabotaged by an unknown source. Cryptic threats are being sent, and his customers are in danger.
Desperate to save the store from closure Forrage seeks the help of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.
Ordered to keep the scandal from the police, Sherlock and Watson begin to decipher the riddles as they are sent in.
The clock is ticking as they race from the depths of Santa’s Grotto in the basement, to the mysteries of the conjuring department.
Who would want to damage the reputation of the famous shop?
And, more importantly, who would want to inflict harm on unsuspecting children?
They must be a close associate; only someone who knows the particulars of the store could undertake the heinous acts undetected.
And with notable peers who have shares in his store, there is no lack of motive…
Sherlock Holmes and the Holborn Emporium is a brilliant addition to the Holmes cannon.
'A treat for any fan of the great detective.' - Robert Foster, best-selling author of 'The Lunar Code'.

Sherlock Holmes and the Holborn Emporium eBook Val Andrews
If you're looking for a baffling mystery within the literary form of the Holmes pastiche, this won't be your oyster. The main aim of author Andrews here is an evocation of the legendary department store Gammages, at the turn of the last century. Here it is in thin disguise as A. W. Forrage, Ltd., e.g. "Forrages." As in a number of Andrews' recent Holmes novels, a number of real, historical characters appear, including magicians Stanley Collins and Wil Goldston... can you spot the others? The plot, to the extent that there is one, is a thinly veiled excuse to have Holmes and Watson wander around Gammages and marvel at the diversity of offerings of this wonderous store. You'll probably (correctly) identify not only the villain, but also his motives, after a few dozen pages. Andrews adds a couple of mild snappers at the end, but at 126 pages it's not just the plot that's thin.
Gammages is the focus, not Holmes and Watson. Keep this in mind as you read and you won't be too disappointed.

Sherlock Holmes and the Holborn Emporium eBook Val Andrews Reviews
The land-locked nature of this story is its downfall - most of the action takes place inside "the store", and when I say action, there isn't a lot of that, either. The puzzles are kind of . . . boring (I got the last one before it actually took place). It would have been better if the author had made the characters leave the store to go find more involving puzzles that really required Holmes' thinking cap to be on his head. Of course, that might have been beyond the talents of this author. Oh, and I almost forgot - the last 10% (or so) of the number of pages cited as included in this novel was an excerpt from another story, by another author - a waste of space because already allows a potential reader to download a sample. Publishers should know that by now (duh!), and not inflate their number of pages with samples!
Sherlock Holmes and the Holborn Emporium by Val Andrews
“In High Holborn, quite close to Hatton Garden, stands that wondrous emporium of A.W. Forrage Ltd.” AW Forrage, Ltd. is a gigantic department store. The store is so big it has a single ring circus and “Santa’s Grotto” in the basement.
The boss, AW Forrage himself wants to consult with Holmes about threats to his department store. The man is a bit self-centered, and that does not set well with Holmes. He seems more concerned as to what the threats he has been receiving will do to his reputation and the value of company stock than the dangers to workers at his emporium.
He has been receiving threats in the form of ever more vague typewritten sheets stating that a department of his store will be hit with a disaster. This happens in many ways.
It started in the grocery department when tintacks were discovered mixed with the currants. Then there was caustic soda in a consignment of bath salts. Next the presents given to youngsters in Santa’s Grotto are replaced with wrapped gifts of live spiders or smelly trash. Each note seems to be vaguer while the acts grow deadlier.
Reading this would have to remind any American of Sam Walton and Wallmart. It is basically Sherlock Holmes versus Retail Magnate.
It was too easy to figure out. It just isn’t as good as many of Val Andrews’ other Holmes Stories. Two stars
Quoth the Raven…
This story was a little diferfent but very enjoyable read.
good not great
Great read. Was a little askance because it wasn't Doyle, but author does a great job. Like reading the origenals.
Fun short story. I would read again. This gives a glimpse of 19th centrury business world.
It is remarkably difficult to produce a Sherlock Holmes story that is even within shouting distance of Conan Doyle's efforts. This one is pleasant but about the usual. The most interesting element is the description of the department store; that's good fun.
If you seek high quality, I'd suggest Lyndsay Faye's Dust and Shadow. For something different (do your homework), try The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R. King!
